Excipients play a crucial role to achieve a drug product and drug delivery profile. With the changes in production options and improvements such as continuous manufacturing and 3D printing as well as enabling new therapies like oral delivery of large molecules and precision medicine the role of excipients from “non-active” ingredient in a formulation has changed to increased functionality and designed for purpose.

A better understanding of the excipients, impact of variabilities on production process, yield  and final drug product is fundamental and needs to be addressed.
