Description

Product Overview

METHOCEL™ K15M is a water-soluble cellulose ether polymer. It is a low substitution hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). The product provides a soft gel texture with a viscosity of 15,000 cP. METHOCEL™ K15M has the highest gelation temperature of 70°C – 90°C (158°F – 194°F).

Application

METHOCEL™ K15M, featured with low substitution level, offers controlled thickening and soft gelling for higher temperature range applications. The product is widely used in ceramics, coatings, adhesives, and any other application when high gelation temperature is required.

  • Adhesives: METHOCEL™ K15M can be used in food contact adhesives. It functions as a film former, thickener, and binder in water-based formulations. It provides wet-tack, quick set, fast dry and oil resistance to various types of adhesives.
  • Ceramics: METHOCEL™ K15M functions as thickener, binder, and rheology modifier in ceramics, extrusion, and casting. It also provides lubricity, smoother surfaces and prevents sag or deformation.
  • Coatings: METHOCEL™ K15M provides an improved thickening and soft gelling in a wide range of coating applications. It also improves workability, stability, and water retention in formulations.

Features & Benefits

  • Water-soluble, can be added directly to aqueous systems
  • Soluble in some solvent systems
  • Forms a semi-firm gel
  • Enables gelation, reversible gelation with heating

Methocel

METHOCEL™ cellulose ethers include methylcellulose (MC) or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) polymers with solubilities ranging from water-soluble to organosoluble. METHOCEL ™ is an excellent rheology modifier, binder, film former, and water-retention agent. In addition, it has a few stand-out qualities. METHOCEL™ does not need hot water to dissolve; it is highly soluble in cold water. Therefore, energy can be conserved in dissolving the product. Another stand-out quality of METHOCEL™ is that once it is gelled by heat, it is able to revert back to liquid form when cooling. Many other thickeners do not have that flexibility.

Product Features

  • Yields protective colloidal action for and suspension of insoluble powders
  • Clear films can lock in moisture and exclude oily contaminants
  • Acts as a pumping aid and as an extrusion aid for various pastes, e.g. ceramics
  • Both solution viscosity and rheology profile can be precisely controlled
  • Acts as a surfactant in aqueous systems providing emulsification and phase stabilization
  • Can revert back to solution upon cooling
  • Will not cause insoluble ionic precipitates
