• Surface modification of cellulose (MCC) with MCC-block-PIBVE.

• MCC-block-PIBVE was produced by mechanochemical cationic polymerization.

• Polymerization of IBVE was initiated by the isolated MCC mechano-cations.

• Isolated MCC-mechano cations were produced by milling of MCC in vacuum.
