Microspheres for targeted drug delivery- A review on recent applications

Microspheres are one of the most explored drug carriers for site-specific delivery of cargoes in a controlled and sustained manner. They are biocompatible, biodegradable, and are capable of surface modifications. A variety of polymers have been explored which can encapsulate drugs with different physicochemical properties. All these properties, together with the different strategies makes them a deserving candidate for targeting to various sites of the body, including lungs, liver, bone, brain, colon, eye, and other malignant tissues in different parts of the body. They are also capable of targeting the macrophages and to cellular organelles like mitochondria. The objective of this review is to highlight the applications of microspheres in the field of targeted drug delivery system.
